Sadie Sink's parents, Lori and Casey Sink, found ways to help make her acting dream come true.

Although Sadie's résumé includes credits on Broadway, Stranger Things and a Taylor Swift music video, she doesn't come from a family of performers. The actress and her four siblings were raised in Texas by their sports-loving mom and dad. They lived in the small town of Brenham — about the halfway point between Houston and Austin — where Casey coached high-level high school football.

Sadie isn’t the only Sink kid who caught the acting bug; her brother, Mitchell Sink, has also appeared on Broadway and TV. “We were born into a pretty sports-oriented family and none of us were exposed to the acting industry growing up,” she explained to Vogue in May 2022. “But for some reason, Mitchell and I had this gravitation towards performing arts—musical theater, specifically.”

Lori recognized her kids’ talent when they would put on performances at home. During a June 2021 appearance on Inside The Moms Club podcast, Sadie’s mother recalled, “We had these two little kids that were wanting to do skits all the time.” However, they didn’t get those genes from her or Casey. Lori emphasized, “My husband and I don’t act. We never did any kind of performing.”

Fortunately, a lack of experience in the industry didn’t stop Lori and Casey from encouraging Sadie and Mitchell to pursue their passions. Sadie’s mother and father even moved the family to New Jersey to be closer to New York City, where more opportunities were available.

They raised Sadie and her siblings in Texas

Sadie spent the first part of her childhood in the small Texas suburb of Brenham.

“My husband was a football coach, and we were just the Friday Night Lights kinda family,” Lori joked during her June 2021 appearance on Inside The Moms Club. “Football was everything.”

After Sadie landed several auditions and Mitchell booked his first Broadway role, Lori and Casey decided to move their family to the East Coast to support their kids’ careers.

At the time, Casey didn’t have a job there yet, so it was a risk, but Lori considered the move “a leap of faith” that ultimately worked out well. The family eventually settled down in Summit, N.J., about 20 miles from N.Y.C.

“We loved it and thought we were gonna just be there the rest of our lives,” Sadie's mother said while reflecting on their Texas life. “We love having those roots.”

Casey is a teacher and coach

Sadie's dad, Casey, is currently a math teacher and football coach at Summit Senior High School, a position he began in September 2013. According to the school’s website, he teaches geometry and algebra 2 and serves as special teams coordinator for the freshman football team.

Before Sadie’s family moved to New Jersey, Casey was a teacher and the offensive line coach at Brenham High School from 1992 to 2013, per his LinkedIn.

The actress’ connection to a math teacher came in handy when she forgot a calculator the day of the PSAT. In the midst of attending school and filming Stranger Things at the same time, the test slipped Sadie's mind.

“Luckily it was the practice one,” she recalled to W magazine in February 2019. “But I still had to text my dad and get him to bring me my graphing calculator.”

They share five children

Throughout their marriage, Lori and Casey have welcomed five kids together: Spencer, Caleb, Mitchell, Sadie and Jacey.

While Mitchell became an actor like Sadie, Caleb pursued a career in football like their father. According to his LinkedIn profile, he works as a senior partnership activation coordinator for the New York Giants.

Spencer, on the other hand, charted his own path in law and is currently an associate attorney at Bagolie Friedman in New Jersey, per his LinkedIn.

Meanwhile, Jacey is in high school, though she has dabbled in the acting world, portraying younger versions of Sadie's characters in Stranger Things and The Whale.

Lori recognized Sadie’s talent early on

During her conversation on Inside The Moms Club, Lori recounted Sadie performing skits and recreating High School Musical scenes when she was young.

The mom of five noticed her daughter’s talent and had her audition for a play at a local community theater. The positive experience led to Lori enrolling Sadie in a Houston acting school, where she ultimately got the opportunity to audition for the Broadway show Annie.

It marked the start of her successful acting career and the catalyst for the Sinks to move across the country to the Big Apple.

“My family has always been so supportive of me and my career,” Sadie told Glamour U.K. in June 2022. “Theatre was such a big part of my life growing up.”

They homeschooled Sadie

While chatting with Rooney Mara for Interview magazine in December 2022, Sadie shared that she was homeschooled for several years.

Though she was taught this way since second grade, she decided to switch it up after a gentle nudge. The decision happened after the 2020 TV series Utopia fell through for Sadie, and her parents took it as a chance to encourage her to go back to regular school.

“That was so, so important for me, because I’d been out of that environment for so long,” she explained. “It was good for me to be a kid.”

Sadie inspired Lori to try a vegan diet

During a June 2018 interview with System magazine, Sadie opened up about going vegan as a teenager and how she inspired her family to change their diets.

“I grew up in Texas, where it’s all about barbecues,” she said. “All my family ate meat, it was the normal thing, and I was blinded by that and thought eating meat was normal.”

Sadie explained that when she first attempted to go vegetarian, she felt “weird” after extended family members noticed and reacted. They did come around in the end — and her mom even followed in her footsteps.

“My family is totally 100-percent supportive of it,” Sadie told System. “At first, they didn’t understand, but now they are really supportive and I think one of my brothers is vegetarian because of it, and my mum went vegan for a while.”

The actress noted that she likes “inspiring others.”

Sadie and her parents have a special bond

Although Sadie’s parents don’t share her passion for performing, they’ve always found ways to connect with and support their daughter.

“Growing up, we watched a lot of musicals like Hairspray and The Sound of Music — I wasn’t allowed to watch Grease, but I secretly did — and we would put on plays and musicals,” Sadie recalled to Backstage in November 2022.

She continued, “We were a sports family, but I feel really lucky that my parents had the same mentality for us [with theater], which was: Go wherever you’re happiest.”

While speaking to Vogue from her family’s New Jersey house in May 2022, Sadie expressed her appreciation for having a safe space to be with her loved ones.

“I love it here,” she told the magazine, explaining that she’s usually “traveling and jumping around from place to place” for work. The actress explained, “It’s nice to have a family home to come back to.”
